Do you need to book a C3PAO now?
Start with the solicitation, contract modification, and prime flowdown. The July 13, 2026 implementing memo directs new procurement documents to designate only Level 1 Self or Level 2 Self. It also directs removal of Level 2 C3PAO and Level 3 requirements from active solicitations and existing contracts on its stated schedule. An unamended document deserves a written answer from the contracting officer or prime before you cancel an assessment.
How do you verify a C3PAO?

Then ask who will perform the work, where the assessment will occur, and how any external service providers fit into the scope. Marketplace status is a starting point. It does not answer the commercial terms in your agreement.
What should the quote state?

Can the same firm consult and assess you?
Ask the C3PAO to state any independence conflict in writing. The Cyber AB’s accreditation requirements place restrictions on organizations that have provided consulting, implementation, or product work to the organization seeking assessment. The particular facts matter. Do not rely on a verbal assurance where the firm has already helped design or implement the assessed environment.
What should you expect on cost and schedule?
No official CMMC source publishes a universal C3PAO price or booking lead time. Treat internet price ranges as market commentary, not a government rate card. A useful quote explains the assumptions that create the number. Compare all bids against one scope and retain the questions and answers with the procurement record.
Contract changes and C3PAO cancellation terms
Read the cancellation and refund clauses before signing. The government’s change to a requirement does not decide a private engagement’s refund outcome. Send the contract change or written direction to the C3PAO promptly, ask for the available options, and preserve the response.
